In Hyderabad, following a Supreme Court decision that allows states to classify Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations, the Madiga Associations have made a significant decision. On Sunday, they agreed to request the government to provide reservations based on population proportions. They plan to discuss this matter with the Chief Minister soon.
A meeting took place at Babu Jagjivanram Bhavan in Banjara Hills, where various associations and former MLA SA Sampath Kumar were present. During the gathering, it was pointed out that there are 23 SC communities, and allegations were made that the Malas are currently benefiting the most from the existing reservation system. Meanwhile, the Madigas have not been receiving the same level of benefits.
According to the 2001 census, the Malas have a population of about 15 lakh, while the Madigas make up around 42 lakh. Sampath Kumar emphasized that he is not against any caste but stressed the importance of securing a better future for the next generations. He promised to ensure that the Chief Minister will hold an important meeting on this issue once he returns from his foreign trip.
Earlier, on August 7, a meeting was chaired by Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha to discuss the Madiga sub-castes. He announced the Chief Minister’s support for sub-classification and suggested creating a committee of legal and community experts. This committee would review the current classification systems in Telangana.
