Sri Konda Lakshman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU) Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Danda Rajireddy, highlighted the need for research on biodegradable plastic to help keep fruits and vegetables fresh for longer. He explained that fruit covers are currently used to protect mango, guava, papadi, sweet potato, and pomegranate crops from pests.

Dr. Rajireddy pointed out that using large amounts of paper covers has led to losses. However, biodegradable plastic could offer better benefits in comparison. He emphasized the importance of developing plastic mulch in different colors, tailored to the needs of specific crops.

Speaking at an event organized by the Sri Group of Industries at Rajendranagar Horticultural College in Hyderabad, he urged scientists to research affordable greenhouse construction. These greenhouses would allow vegetables to be grown throughout the year at a lower cost.
