Union Minister Smriti Irani mocked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during an event in Thiruvananthapuram. She claimed that it was lucky for her to have sent Gandhi from Amethi to Wayanad, as when he was the MP for Amethi, 80% of the population lacked access to electricity and there were no indoor stadium, Kendriya Vidyalaya, fire station, medical college, or sainik school. However, after he left, all these issues were resolved.

Irani made these comments while inaugurating the Kerala unit of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh’s state-level Women Labour Convention. She warned that if Gandhi remains in Wayanad, then the condition of Wayanad will become similar to Amethi. She asked people to ensure that he does not stay in power in Wayanad.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi by almost 55,000 votes. Before Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi both served as representatives for the district. Rahul Gandhi ran for office in 2019 from Amethi and Wayanad. However, after losing in Amethi, he became the Wayanad MP.

Rahul Gandhi was removed from the Lok Sabha in March following his conviction in the Modi last name case. No byelection has been declared yet for Wayanad, and he could regain his Lok Sabha seat if his conviction is overturned. However, the court has not given him any relief in the matter.
