Telangana Launches 'Clean and Green Energy Policy-2025'

The Telangana government has unveiled the ‘Clean and Green Energy Policy-2025’ to boost renewable energy production and address the state’s future electricity needs. The policy was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday.

The new policy aims to add 20,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This initiative is expected to support the state’s inclusive development while addressing the increasing demand for electricity from various sectors.

The government estimates that the policy will attract investments worth ₹1.98 lakh crore and generate 1.14 lakh job opportunities over the next decade. This is part of Telangana’s efforts to prepare for future electricity demands driven by ambitious projects like Metro Rail expansion, Future City, AI City, Pharma City, the Regional Ring Road, and the Industrial Corridor.

Currently, Telangana has recorded a peak power demand of 15,623 MW in 2024. Projections indicate that this demand will nearly double to 31,809 MW by 2034-35. The Clean and Green Energy Policy aims to address these growing needs.

Officials highlighted that the policy includes significant incentives, such as tax exemptions and subsidies, to encourage industrialists to invest in green energy projects. The state’s favorable climate, with approximately 300 sunny days annually, positions Telangana as one of the leading states for solar and wind energy generation in India.

Under this policy, developers will be supported to establish solar, wind, and pumped storage power plants. Renewable energy projects will be set up on both private and government lands, with government lands available for lease at nominal rates. Investors will be allowed to sell power to DISCOMs or private companies through open access.

The policy also promotes innovative solutions like floating solar power projects. Reservoirs will be allocated to central and state public sector undertakings for setting up such projects through competitive bidding or direct nomination.

Women’s self-help groups will play a key role in the renewable energy push. They will be encouraged to establish solar power plants with capacities ranging from 500 kilowatts to 2 megawatts. DISCOMs will purchase the electricity generated by these plants.

Rooftop solar power plants will also receive a boost, particularly on government schools, Indiramma houses, government buildings, and village panchayat offices. This initiative aims to maximize the state’s renewable energy potential while making it accessible at the grassroots level.
