The Telangana Cabinet has proposed significant changes to local body election rules and plans for the next phase of the Hyderabad Metro. The decisions are part of a host of key resolutions made at a recent meeting.
Two-Child Norm Removed
In a significant move, the Cabinet reviewed and decided to remove the rule barring candidates with more than two children from contesting in local body elections. The Cabinet opined that this restriction is no longer necessary as population control is stabilising in the region.
Hyderabad Metro Phase-2 Expansion in Progress
The Cabinet discussed the future of the Metro Phase-1 project, currently under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model with Larsen & Toubro (L&T). A high-level committee led by the Chief Secretary has been formed to assess the feasibility of taking back Metro Phase-1 to proceed with the 2A and 2B expansion. The committee will report its findings to the Cabinet Sub-Committee, which will make the final decision.
Land Swap Deal with Defence Ministry
The government plans to give 435.08 acres to the Defence Ministry in return for the land used to construct elevated corridors from Paradise Junction to ORR and Dairy Farm Road.
Record Paddy Procurement Expected
Telangana is expecting a record-high paddy yield of 1.48 lakh metric tonnes this monsoon. Of this, 80 lakh MT will reach procurement centres. The Centre agreed to procure 50 lakh MT, and the state will request an additional 15 lakh MT. The relevant departments will coordinate to ensure smooth procurement without inconveniencing farmers. Direct deposits for MSP and a ₹500 bonus per quintal for fine rice varieties will be made to the farmers’ accounts.
New Agriculture Colleges and Local Quota Increase
The Cabinet has approved the establishment of three new Agriculture Colleges in Huzurnagar, Kodangal, and Nizamabad. In addition, the reservation for Telangana students in NALSAR admissions has been doubled from 25% to 50%.
Development of Roads and Railways
Approval has been given for 5,566 km of road development under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The state will also bear ₹438 crore for land acquisition required for the Krishna-Vikarabad broad-gauge line.
Additional Land for Universities and Market Yard
Seven acres of additional land has been approved for NALSAR Law University at its current location. Moreover, 10 acres have been allocated for the Ankur Market Yard in Julurupadu, Bhadradri Kothagudem district.
Praja Palana Celebrations Planned
To celebrate two years of the Praja Government, “Praja Palana – Praja Vijayotsavam” will be held from December 1 to 9. A Cabinet Sub-Committee will plan and execute the celebrations.
