The credits for degree courses in India have been revised once again. Initially, officials planned to reduce the credits from 150 to 124. However, the number is now set at 142. This change was decided by the Higher Education Council.
On Thursday, a meeting took place in Hyderabad with university Vice-Chancellors, chaired by TGCHE Chairman Balakishta Reddy. The main topic was the adjustment of credits and course content in degree programs.
Many Vice-Chancellors expressed concerns about reducing credits for language courses. They argued that such a move would make it difficult for students who want to continue with postgraduate studies in those languages. Consequently, the decision was made to keep 20 credits for language subjects, following the previous system.
The new 142-credit system will start in the 2025–26 academic year, with small changes. The first-year syllabus for several subjects will be reduced by 15 to 20 percent. This updated syllabus will be distributed to all universities. Additionally, a unified syllabus will be adopted across institutions in the future.
