Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy has promised to oppose the Banakacharla project planned by the Andhra Pradesh government. He mentioned that the Central Water Commission, Godavari River Management Board, and the Polavaram Project Authority have all denied approval for this project. Telangana’s objections played a significant role in this decision. The Central Government has also stopped environmental clearances due to concerns from Telangana’s irrigation department.
Reddy spoke at a ration card distribution event in Dharmaram, Peddapalli district. He was joined by Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and Adluri Laxman Kumar. He emphasized that Telangana had clearly expressed its opposition during a recent Chief Ministers’ meeting in Delhi. He argued that the project goes against the State Bifurcation Act and the 1980 Godavari River Water Distribution Agreements. Reddy also criticized Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders for making careless remarks despite these serious issues.
