Hyderabad: Telangana is witnessing a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with new data showing a sharp jump in registrations and daily vehicle sales following the state’s revised EV policy implemented in late 2024.
According to official figures shared by the Transport Department, daily vehicle registrations increased from 209 to 252, marking a 21% rise after the policy rollout. The growth reflects increasing consumer interest in cleaner mobility options and the impact of government incentives.
Registrations Nearly Double in One Year
Before the new policy came into effect in November 2024, Telangana had around 47,730 registered EVs. However, in FY 2025–26 alone, registrations surged to 91,572 units, indicating a rapid shift towards electric mobility.
The total EV count in the state has now crossed 1.68 lakh vehicles, highlighting the pace at which adoption is accelerating.
Hyderabad Accounts for Majority Share
Greater Hyderabad continues to dominate EV adoption in the state, accounting for over 55,000 registrations, which is nearly 67% of the total share. Experts attribute this to better charging infrastructure, higher purchasing power, and increased awareness among urban consumers.
Two-Wheelers Driving Growth
Electric two-wheelers remain the biggest contributors to the surge. Out of total EV sales in FY 2025–26:
- 62,871 units were electric motorcycles and scooters
- 18,874 units were electric cars
This trend is consistent with national patterns, where affordability and lower running costs are pushing more buyers toward electric scooters and bikes.
Over ₹6,000 Crore EV Market in a Year
The EV ecosystem in Telangana is also seeing strong financial growth. Data shows that the total invoice value of EVs reached ₹6,296.85 crore in FY 2025–26.
- ₹771.91 crore came from transport vehicles
- ₹5,524.95 crore from non-transport vehicles
Leading manufacturers contributing to this growth include Mahindra Electric, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, MG Motor India, BYD India, and Olectra Greentech.
Policy Push and Incentives Behind the Boom
The Telangana government’s EV policy focuses on subsidies, tax exemptions, and charging infrastructure expansion. Benefits such as road tax waivers, registration fee exemptions, and incentives for manufacturers have made EVs more attractive to buyers.
The state is also working on expanding public charging networks, especially in Hyderabad and along major highways, to reduce range anxiety among users.
Growing Shift Towards Clean Mobility
Officials say the rise in EV adoption aligns with Telangana’s broader goal of promoting clean energy and reducing urban pollution. With fuel prices remaining volatile and environmental awareness increasing, more consumers are exploring electric options.
Industry observers believe that if the current trend continues, Telangana could emerge as one of India’s leading EV markets in the next few years, with Hyderabad playing a central role in this transition.
