In a major step toward inclusion, the Telangana government has decided to provide housing to transgender traffic assistants in Hyderabad under the Indiramma Housing Scheme. This announcement came from Minister Danasari Anasuya, also known as Seethakka, during a meeting at the state Secretariat.
Back in December 2024, the state made history by hiring 44 transgender individuals as Traffic Assistants. Seethakka called it a proud moment for Telangana and a first for India. She said the move brought “dignity, opportunity, and inclusion” to the community, showing the government’s commitment to equal rights.
Out of the 44 assistants hired, 38 are currently working with the Hyderabad Police Traffic Department. Seethakka also said that homes will be given under the disability quota, and the government is exploring more job opportunities for transgender people across departments. “We want to create a society where everyone has equal chances,” she added.
To support the community further, the government is strengthening services like Maitri Clinics in multiple districts. These clinics offer health and social support for transgender citizens.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand praised the fast-track recruitment process, completed in just ten days under orders from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He applauded the traffic assistants for their discipline and dedication. “So far, there have been zero complaints,” he noted. He also mentioned plans to help those interested in private security jobs.
Anitha Ramachandran, Secretary of Women and Child Welfare, said Telangana’s bold move has drawn national attention. Other states have reached out, wanting to adopt similar steps. Traffic officials confirmed that the transgender assistants have blended well into their roles and are performing with professionalism.
For many in the transgender community, this initiative has been life-changing. One assistant shared, “We were invisible for 76 years. Today, we stand alongside police officers with pride.” They asked the government to extend the same benefits given to home guards and thanked them for treating them as equals.
Encouraged by the success of the program, the Telangana government plans to expand the initiative. It is now the first state in India to officially bring transgender individuals into government service.
