Tensions rose in Kothapeta and Chaitanyapuri areas on Friday when local residents stopped government officials from conducting a survey. The survey was to mark houses that were reportedly built on encroached land along the Musi River. The situation got worse when one distressed person tried to commit suicide by pouring petrol on himself, but locals quickly stopped him.
The government has plans to remove homes that were built illegally along the Musi River. They have promised to provide double-bedroom houses within the city to those affected. However, many residents are confused about what it means to “vacate” their homes. They are uncertain about where they will live in the future.
Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender has shown support for the residents. He even joined them in a protest (called a dharna) in Chaitanyapuri to help express their concerns. As the authorities prepare to possibly demolish the existing homes, the ongoing tension highlights the larger issues surrounding land rights and housing policies in the area.
