Tensions rose near Nizam College on Wednesday as students protested the admissions policy at the college’s girls hostel.
The students gathered at Basheerbagh Square and criticized the principal for allowing postgraduate (PG) students to stay in the girls hostel, which they believe should be reserved only for undergraduate (UG) students.
The protest caused major traffic disruptions from Liberty to Abids, leading to a heavy traffic jam in the area. The students were frustrated because they couldn’t secure accommodation in the hostel, even after a new UG girls hostel was built in 2022.
At that time, there were fewer UG admissions, so PG students were allowed to stay in the hostel. However, this year, a large number of UG admissions have made it difficult for students to find affordable housing.
Many students are now forced to live in private hostels with high fees. The protesters demanded that the principal address their concerns and prioritize UG students for hostel admissions. They promised to keep protesting until their demands are met.
