Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has alerted people about a new cyber scam. This scam involves fake APK files pretending to be RTO traffic challan notifications.
Cybercriminals are targeting WhatsApp users, according to TGCSB. Scammers send misleading messages through groups with names like ‘TS Traffic Police Updates’ or ‘RTO Alerts Hyderabad,’ usually in the evening. These messages contain a link to download a file named ‘RTO Traffic Challan.apk,’ which tricks people into installing it.
Once installed, this harmful APK file allows scammers to access the victim’s device. They can steal sensitive information like banking details, credit card information, and SMS messages containing One Time Passwords (OTPs).
Victims often notice unauthorized transactions, mainly on online shopping sites. The malware gives attackers remote control of the infected device. TGCSB warns that these attacks are highly dangerous as they exploit people’s trust in seemingly official communications.
The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau advises against clicking links or downloading APKs from unknown sources. Do not trust WhatsApp group names, as attackers use official-sounding names. Only install apps from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Enable OTP alerts and block your card immediately if you suspect fraud. Report any incidents by calling 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in.
