Hyderabad: On Monday, Dr. K Laxman, a Rajya Sabha MP, expressed his worries about the increasing cyber fraud and online financial crimes in India. He called for stronger measures to improve the country’s cybersecurity.
India is rapidly moving towards digital banking and UPI transactions, especially through the Digital India initiative. This shift makes many people, particularly older adults and those in semi-urban and rural areas, more susceptible to complex online scams.
Dr. Laxman recognized the efforts of the government, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and CERT-In in providing timely warnings and implementing protective strategies. He appreciated campaigns like Cyber Jaagrukta Abhiyan for educating people about cyber risks.
Despite these actions, Dr. Laxman emphasized the need for more steps. He urged the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Electronics and IT, and other agencies to strengthen enforcement, enhance rapid-response mechanisms, and boost digital literacy from the ground up.
He noted that many scams occur due to a lack of digital knowledge and recommended that state governments set up specialized cybercrime units with well-trained officers.
“The digital revolution should not create fear,” Dr. Laxman stated. “People must feel safe using online services. Achieving this requires strong security, quick problem-solving, and extensive education.”
