    Telangana ranked 6th in patents filing in 2022-23, with Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh taking the top three spots. The Indian Patents Office reported a 5.94% increase in overall patents filed in the country under Intellectual Properties.

    The report highlighted that IP innovators, educational institutions, companies, start-ups, and SMEs were leading the way in patent filings, with a total of 82,811 filed in 2022-23. This was a significant increase from the previous year. However, no educational institutions from Telangana made it to the top 10 rankings, indicating room for improvement.

    In design filings, Telangana ranked 13th with 394 applications, while Maharashtra led with 3,683 designs filed. Similarly, Telangana stood 9th in trademarks filings with 17,817 applications, compared to Maharashtra’s 85,539.

    The percentage of Indian applicant filings rose to 52.59% this year, showing a positive trend. Educational institutions accounted for the majority of patent filings, followed by individual innovators, companies, and foreign entities. Startups filed 2016 patents, while SMEs filed 1329. Trademarks, designs, copyrights, GIs, and semiconductor IC layouts also saw significant numbers of filings.

    Private universities like Lovely Professional University led in patent filings for educational institutions. IIT Hyderabad ranked 5th nationally in scientific and research development organizations. Major pharma companies from Telangana also featured in the top 10 ranking for PCT filing applications in international countries.

    With a growing number of startups and MSMEs in India, there is potential for a significant increase in IPR filings in the coming years. The IP landscape in India is evolving rapidly, with the patent office working to expedite grant processes. India’s vibrant SMEs and start-up ecosystem suggest a potential for over 10 Lakh IPR filings by 2026.
