Hyderabad: The Cyberabad Traffic Police have continued their strict checks on drunk driving. Over the weekend, they carried out a special drive in areas under the Cyberabad Commissionerate and caught more than 218 people driving under the influence of alcohol.
This campaign was launched due to a rise in accidents caused by drunk driving. The police set up checkpoints in different locations and carried out large-scale testing. The drive mainly targeted weekends when such incidents are more common.
Among the 218 caught, 176 were riding two-wheelers, 19 were driving three-wheelers, and 23 were behind the wheel of four-wheelers. The police reported that 30 of these drivers had blood alcohol levels between 200 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml, which is far above the legal limit.
Four of the offenders were underage, between 18 and 20 years old. The highest number of violators—96—were in the 31 to 40 age group. Another 76 belonged to the 21 to 30 age group, while 31 were aged between 41 and 50.
All the individuals caught during this drive will be brought before the Court. The police also discovered cases of both underage drinking and drunk driving. While the traffic police handled the drunk driving charges, it will be up to the law and order police to investigate where the underage drinkers obtained alcohol.
Cyberabad police have warned that anyone driving under the influence and causing a fatal accident will face serious punishment. They can be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which could lead to up to 10 years in jail and a fine.
