Wine sellers ask government to allow shops near hospitals

Hyderabad: The Telangana Wine Dealers Association has asked the state government to exclude hospitals from Rule 25 under the GHMC limits for liquor sales. The Telangana Excise Act requires liquor shops to be a certain distance away from schools, religious sites, and hospitals. However, the association argues that this rule does not affect hospital operations or impact patients and their families.

As the population grows and more medical facilities are built, finding locations for liquor shops that meet these rules within the GHMC area is becoming difficult. Long-standing retail shops are also struggling as new hospitals and schools open nearby, forcing them to relocate. Finding new premises in the city is challenging.

The association also wants larger permit rooms. The current size cannot accommodate the increasing number of customers. Association President D Venkateshwara Rao suggests expanding the permit room size to at least 200 square meters for better service.
