Global: Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is stepping up its ambitions in the messaging space with the development of “XChat”, a new feature aimed at competing directly with apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. The move is part of Elon Musk’s long-term plan to turn X into an multi-purpose “everything app”.
While X already offers direct messaging, XChat is expected to be a more advanced, standalone-style messaging system with features that go beyond basic conversations. Early reports and platform updates suggest that the company is working on making messaging more secure, interactive, and integrated with other services on X.
What XChat Is Expected to Offer
Sources indicate that XChat may include end-to-end encryption, improved group chat functionality, media sharing, and possibly voice and video calling features. The goal is to provide a seamless communication experience similar to WhatsApp, while also integrating it with X’s existing ecosystem.
There are also indications that usernames instead of phone numbers could be used for communication, giving users more privacy and flexibility compared to traditional messaging apps.
Part of the “Everything App” Vision
Elon Musk has repeatedly stated that X will evolve into a platform that combines social networking, payments, content, and communication in one place. XChat is expected to play a key role in this transformation by acting as the platform’s core messaging layer.
Industry observers believe that future updates could also integrate payments, business communication tools, and AI-based chat features, making XChat more than just a messaging app.
Competition With WhatsApp and Others
The messaging space is currently dominated by WhatsApp, which has a massive user base, especially in countries like India. Competing with such established platforms will require XChat to offer strong privacy features, reliability, and unique capabilities.
Experts say X’s advantage lies in its existing global user base and the ability to integrate messaging directly with public conversations, creators, and businesses already active on the platform.
Rollout and Availability
X has not officially announced a full public launch date for XChat yet. However, signs of development and testing suggest that the feature could be rolled out in phases, starting with select users before expanding globally.
If successfully implemented, XChat could reshape how users interact on the platform and challenge the dominance of traditional messaging apps in the coming years.
