There is a drinking water crisis in Telangana, with a shortage of 26 million litres per day to meet the needs of the people. 67 municipalities in the state are facing issues with their water supply due to decreasing levels in available sources. This includes 10 urban areas like Khammam and Karimnagar.
To address this crisis, the Irrigation department has asked Karnataka for help. They have identified reservoirs and water bodies under the Krishna and Godavari rivers to get water for drinking. The state needs 1,398.5 MLD of drinking water per day, but is currently only supplying 1,371 MLD. The remaining 26.31 MLD will be taken from reservoirs and dams.
Some municipalities are receiving sufficient water, with over 135 litres per person per day. However, 67 municipalities are below the recommended 100 LPCD. Plans are in place to supply water from certain reservoirs to areas like Khammam and Karimnagar.
Efforts are also being made to get water released from Karnataka’s Narayanpur dam for Gadwal and other parts of Mahbubnagar district. Each district has received Rs 100 crore for drinking water needs, with Rs 1 crore allocated to each assembly segment.
All rural areas in Telangana have access to drinking water through Mission Bhagiratha, and water tankers are available in municipalities with severe water shortages.
