Telangana Assembly to Discuss Caste Survey in Special Session

The Telangana Assembly will hold a special session on February 4 to discuss the caste survey conducted by the government. The session is set to begin at 11 a.m., during which the government will formally present the findings of the survey on the floor of the House.

This caste survey is part of the state’s preparation for upcoming Gram Panchayat elections. According to party sources, the government aims to give the survey legal validity in the Assembly before moving forward with the elections. The survey findings are expected to play a key role in shaping policies related to reservations and welfare schemes.

The Planning Commission has already submitted the caste census report to a cabinet sub-committee for review. The Revanth-led government is reportedly planning to increase reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) based on the survey results. Additionally, there is a possibility that the Assembly will pass a resolution requesting the Centre to conduct a caste census across the country. The sub-committee report reveals that BCs make up 55.85% of Telangana’s population, which could influence future policy decisions.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has hinted at the Gram Panchayat elections during a public meeting in Rangareddy district. He has tasked Congress leaders with ensuring the party’s success in the elections. The government is also working on plans to implement reservations in a legally sound manner to avoid any challenges.

The caste survey, conducted over 50 days, collected data from 3.54 crore people in Telangana. The findings indicate that 96.9% of registered families belong to the caste community, while 3.1% of the details were not recorded during the survey. This data will guide the state government in implementing its promises, including the commitment to increase BC reservations, as highlighted during the Assembly elections.
