Hyderabad: Telangana BJP leader N. Ramachander Rao has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about an important legal case affecting the spiritual rights of SC/ST communities. In a letter dated August 18, 2025, Rao urged the central government to engage actively in Special Reference Case No. 1 of 2025, which is being reviewed by the Supreme Court’s Constitution Bench.
The case involves Issue No. 12, which is about the “substantial Deity interest and Doctrine of Dharma” linked to Tiruppan Alwar Ammal, a saint deeply respected by marginalized communities. Rao stressed the need for a thorough constitutional analysis by at least five judges, as required by Article 145(3) of the Indian Constitution.
Rao explained that complex legal questions need careful handling to avoid decisions that might harm the nation’s spiritual and social fabric. He warned that ignoring these issues could weaken inclusive temple traditions and reduce SC/ST representation in spiritual spaces. The letter mentioned that Attorney General R. Venkataramani is serving as ‘Amicus Curiae’ for the case. Rao asked the Prime Minister to ensure the government’s legal team is well-prepared to address cultural and constitutional aspects.
This appeal is part of a broader national conversation about temple management, caste fairness, and constitutional values in religious matters. Rao wants the legal process to honor both constitutional principles and India’s diverse devotional practices.
Rao highlighted that the concerns about Tiruppan Alwar Ammal are crucial for the spiritual dignity of SC/ST communities, who are a vital part of the country. He urged the central government to ensure that the voices of these marginalized groups are heard in the ongoing legal and spiritual discussions.
