Hyderabad – Leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) have raised serious concerns over the recent claims made about Telangana being a model state for the caste census. They argued that the Backward Classes (BCs) were underrepresented, with their population percentage shown as 42% instead of the actual 50%.
During a press meet at the party headquarters, senior BRS members V Srinivas Goud, B Lingaiah Yadav, and Anjaiah Yadav welcomed the Central Government’s decision to carry out a caste census. However, they warned that it must be done properly and fairly.
Goud stressed that true justice for BCs can only be achieved if they are given 50% reservation in both education and employment, and also in legislative bodies. He added that the government should create a dedicated BC Ministry and allocate funds based on their population share.
The BRS leaders questioned how Telangana could be highlighted as a national example when the data on BCs was inaccurate. They alleged that the recent BC survey conducted in the state contained several errors and inconsistencies. They urged the Central Government not to use Telangana’s flawed data as a benchmark.
They criticized the Congress Party, asking why it failed to conduct a BC caste census during its 11 terms in power at the Centre. They also pointed out that the Congress ignored the Kamareddy BC declaration and accused it of treating BCs as nothing more than a vote bank. The leaders also questioned why the BC census report in Karnataka hasn’t been released yet, suggesting that Congress may be applying different policies in different states.
The BRS reminded the public that their party was the first to advocate for a BC caste census. Back in 2014, the KCR-led government had passed a resolution urging the Centre to provide legislative reservations for BCs. Again, in 2021, the Telangana Assembly pushed for a caste-based census to be included in the national count.
Finally, they challenged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to lead by example. “If he truly supports BC empowerment, he should ensure that Cabinet positions for BCs reflect their actual population share,” they demanded.
