A team of BRS leaders, led by KT Rama Rao, is busy meeting legal experts in New Delhi. Their goal is to ensure that the MLAs who have left the party are disqualified.
On Monday, the BRS leaders had a meeting with constitutional experts in New Delhi. According to the party leaders, they plan to file a case in the Supreme Court soon. They believe that the court’s verdict will clarify the issue of disqualification within a month, making by-elections in Telangana inevitable.
The leaders met Constitutional expert Aryama Sundaram. He informed them that the Supreme Court had given verdicts on similar cases involving Manipur MLAs. Sundaram told the BRS leaders that the Speaker cannot indefinitely delay a decision on disqualification. The BRS leaders presented the legal experts with their petition filed in the High Court, their complaint to the Speaker against the defecting MLAs, and related documents.
The legal experts mentioned that the High Court is unlikely to delay the decision for a long time, as the Supreme Court’s guidelines are now clear. They said that if the High Court does not announce its decision soon, the case could go to the Supreme Court.
KT Rama Rao, the working president, said that the party would continue the legal battle based on the advice of constitutional experts. He expressed confidence that by-elections in Telangana were inevitable. He also criticized the Congress party, saying it was working against the spirit of the Constitution in Telangana.
Later, MLA G Jagadish Reddy spoke to reporters. He stated that efforts were being made to take action against the MLAs who defected from the BRS. “We are fighting a legal battle to disqualify those MLAs. Governments acting against the law should be taught a lesson. It is the Congress party which brought the anti-defection law and is now going against it,” Reddy said. He added that the party is acting differently in different states and mentioned that they had asked for time to meet Kavitha in Tihar Jail. If the prison authorities permit, they will visit her.
