Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a new initiative called ‘Swachadanam – Pachadanam’ (cleanliness-greenery). This five-day programme aims to improve cleanliness and greenery in the city.
The first day focused on cleaning garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) and addressing improper garbage disposal. The GHMC identified households and establishments for better garbage management and began planting trees.
On Monday, the programme included clearing all GVPs, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, and rationalising and attaching SAT drivers to households. The goal was to ensure litter-free roads, particularly on main roads. A market area committee was created to ensure zero waste in markets. They distributed 34,719 plants and planted 9,415 saplings. Additionally, they undertook 2,098 meters of median plantations and 36.7 km of avenue plantations.
Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, along with GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata and Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi, formally launched the campaign in NBT Nagar. The Mayor emphasized efforts to make the city cleaner, healthier, and more pleasant.
Commissioner Amrapali Kata mentioned that the beautification and cleanliness works will continue for five days until August 9. She urged residents not to throw garbage on roads and open areas. Measures are also being taken for mosquito prevention and to control vector-borne diseases, with a particular emphasis on observing Friday as a dry day.
GHMC officers visited 340 colonies across the city, collecting 1,104 tonnes of garbage per day (TPD) and 800 TPD of C&D waste. They connected 373 SATs to households, residential welfare associations (RWAs), and commercial establishments. They eliminated 28 GVPs and cleared 1,080 GVPs. They also cleaned 124 community halls, 127 educational institutions, 50 graveyards, and 21 railway tracks.
In terms of health measures, desilting of drains covered over 29.447 km, and 245 potholes were filled. Anti-larva operations were conducted in 58,809 houses, fogging occurred in 211 colonies and at 9 lakes. They sterilized 464 stray dogs and identified 150 unsterilized dogs. They also found 136 people feeding dogs in 150 feeding areas.
From lakes, they removed 16.7 TPD of solid waste and 6.7 TPD of C&D waste. They also cleared 40 GVPs in water bodies. Furthermore, 354 awareness meetings on digital door numbering and 193 SLF meetings were conducted.
