Hyderabad: Undergraduate students of Nizam College held a silent protest on Monday in front of the college. They are demanding that all hostel rooms be allotted to undergraduate female students.
The students have been protesting for three days. They want 100 percent of the hostel admissions to be given to undergraduate students, especially women. Despite a government order that requires hostel admissions for undergraduate students, nothing has changed. About 500 female students need a place to stay in the college hostels. Because there isn’t enough space, they have to stay in private hostels, which costs a lot of money.
Mahitha, a third-year History student, said, “We are frustrated with sending representations and requesting the college authorities to accommodate UG women, but all our efforts have fallen on deaf ears.”
Nidhi, a final-year Computer Science student, added, “My friends and I have been raising our voices about this issue for years, but the authorities are not taking any action. Sometimes we get rooms on campus, but in most cases, we have to rely on private women’s hostels. Moreover, we are being charged hostel fees without receiving proper room allocations and other facilities.”
The students are hoping that their silent protest will finally bring attention to their needs.
