Hyderabad: In a major boost to Telangana’s infrastructure and connectivity ambitions, the Central Government has officially approved the construction of the Northern Section of the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road (RRR), paving the way for one of the state’s biggest road infrastructure projects.
The approval clears the path for commencement of works on the long-pending 161-kilometre northern corridor, which will be developed as a 6-lane access-controlled expressway under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
Officials said the project is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion around Hyderabad, and unlock large-scale economic growth across peripheral districts.
Project Cost Revised to Nearly ₹24,000 Crore
According to reports, the Centre has approved a revised project cost of approximately ₹23,995 crore for the northern section of the RRR. The cost increased substantially from earlier estimates after the project was upgraded from a proposed 4-lane corridor to a future-ready 6-lane expressway. The project will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Tenders Invited for Two Major Packages
The entire northern section has been divided into two major construction packages, and tenders have already been invited by NHAI for execution of the works.
Officials stated that the road will be built under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), a financing mechanism where both the government and private developers share project costs and operational responsibilities.
The HAM model is increasingly being used for large-scale highway projects across India to accelerate infrastructure delivery while reducing financial risk for contractors.
Route: Sangareddy to Yadadri Bhuvanagiri
The approved northern corridor will stretch from:
- Girmapur near Sangareddy
- Narsapur
- Toopran
- Gajwel
- Jagdevpur
- Pragnapur
- Yadagirigutta region
- Thangadpalli in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district
The corridor will connect several important national highways and regional growth centers around Hyderabad.
Part of Massive 340-km Regional Ring Road Project
The Hyderabad Regional Ring Road is one of Telangana’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
The proposed RRR will form a massive outer mobility loop around Hyderabad beyond the existing Outer Ring Road (ORR).
The entire project spans approximately 340 kilometres and is divided into:
- Northern Section – 161 km
- Southern Section – approximately 182 km
The project aims to connect major towns, industrial corridors, logistics hubs, and national highways surrounding Hyderabad.
Designed to Reduce Hyderabad Traffic Congestion
Urban planners and transport experts believe the RRR will play a major role in reducing pressure on Hyderabad’s existing road infrastructure.
The project is expected to:
- Divert heavy inter-state traffic away from Hyderabad city
- Reduce congestion on ORR and city roads
- Improve freight movement efficiency
- Boost regional industrial connectivity
- Improve logistics operations
- Support future urban expansion
Officials said the RRR will especially benefit cargo movement between North and South India by enabling vehicles to bypass crowded urban corridors.
Economic Growth Corridors Expected Along RRR
Experts say the RRR is expected to trigger large-scale economic activity and real estate development around Hyderabad’s outer districts.
The corridor is likely to accelerate growth in:
- Industrial parks
- Warehousing zones
- Logistics hubs
- Satellite townships
- Commercial corridors
- Residential developments
Areas around Sangareddy, Medak, Siddipet, Gajwel, and Yadadri are expected to witness increased investment activity once construction begins.
Integration with Other Mega Infrastructure Projects
The RRR project is expected to integrate with several ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects around Hyderabad including:
- Outer Ring Road (ORR)
- Regional Ring Rail (ORRail)
- Future City project
- Hyderabad Pharma City
- National highway corridors
- Industrial freight routes
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has already expanded metropolitan planning boundaries up to the upcoming RRR corridor anticipating rapid urbanization in surrounding regions. [oai_citation:1‡hmda.gov.in](https://www.hmda.gov.in/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
Land Acquisition and Farmer Concerns
While the project has received strong support from infrastructure and industry sectors, land acquisition remains a sensitive issue in several stretches.
In recent months, farmers and local residents in some areas raised concerns regarding:
- Land acquisition compensation
- Alignment changes
- Impact on agricultural land
- Property loss
The Telangana government previously stated that land acquisition would proceed only after consultations with affected farmers and local communities. Expected Completion by 2029
Officials indicated that, barring unforeseen delays, the northern section of the Hyderabad RRR is expected to become operational by 2029.
The project is seen as a critical part of Hyderabad’s next phase of expansion, aimed at transforming the city into a larger integrated metropolitan and logistics hub over the coming decade.
With the Centre now formally clearing the northern section, the Hyderabad Regional Ring Road has moved from planning stage into full-scale execution mode.
