Mulugu, a small town in Telangana, has seen little progress since it became a district in 2019. Despite its importance as a stop for tourists and pilgrims, the town still lacks basic infrastructure like a proper bus station.
The current bus station, built in 1989, is in poor shape and no longer meets the needs of the growing number of visitors. However, change is finally on the way.
On Sunday, Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar laid the foundation stone for a brand-new bus station. The project, estimated at ₹4.80 crore, is expected to be completed in about six months.
Mulugu holds a strategic location on National Highway 163. It connects several major tourist attractions, including the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple, the scenic Laknavaram Lake, the wild beauty of Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary, and the stunning Bogatha Waterfalls. The town also hosts Sammakka-Saralamma Jatara, Asia’s largest tribal fair, attracting nearly 1 crore devotees every two years.
Interestingly, when Mulugu became a district headquarters, it was still only a gram panchayat. It later gained municipal status in 2022, reflecting its gradual growth.
To further boost transport in the region, Minister Prabhakar announced that a new bus station is already being built in Mangapet. He also shared plans to set up a bus depot in Eturnagaram, with a budget of ₹7 crore, to serve tribal areas more effectively.
Minister Seethakka highlighted that recent visits by Miss World contestants to the Ramappa Temple have helped put Mulugu on the global map. She said Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is deeply committed to developing the region by promoting tourism, which could create new income opportunities for local tribal communities.
The construction of the new bus station marks a major step toward improving transport infrastructure and unlocking economic potential through tourism in Mulugu district.
