Hyderabad is seeing a major cleanup effort led by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The Entomology Department has launched a special sanitation drive targeting key water bodies in the city. They’ve brought in heavy machinery, like floating weed-harvesting machines, and multiple trucks to remove waste efficiently and prevent it from piling up.
In Karwan constituency, this cleanup focuses on reducing water pollution and tackling mosquito-borne diseases, especially with the monsoon approaching. Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin mentioned that important sites are being cleaned, including the historic Katora Houz, water bodies in the Golconda area, the Musi River along Karwan, Langar Houz HUDA Pond, and Shah Hatim Lake.
Mohiuddin noted that six Hitachi machines and weed-harvesting machines are working in phases to clear these water bodies, removing water hyacinth and other weeds. This machinery deployment followed a request from AIMIM.
Drones are also being used to spray mosquito larvicidal oil on the water, a preventive step to control mosquito breeding and reduce diseases like dengue and malaria. The MLA is overseeing the drive to maintain public health and sanitation in the area.
Additionally, sanitary workers are actively collecting and transporting garbage from various city areas to ensure cleanliness and reduce disease spread during the monsoon. A special initiative is underway to clear long-standing garbage spots using earth movers, transport vehicles, and a large workforce. This cleanup covers flood-prone zones, focusing on garbage removal, drain cleaning, and fogging to control vector-borne diseases. GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan recently highlighted the importance of community and political leader cooperation for the drive’s success.
