Hyderabad has been experiencing severe waterlogging due to recent rainfall, especially in the central and northern regions. This situation highlights the urgent need for better sewage systems and stormwater drains.

Several low-lying areas such as Neredmet, RK Puram, Malkajgiri, Devi Nagar, Red Hills, Asif Nagar, and Tolichowki have been significantly impacted. The sewage pipelines in these neighborhoods, installed over a decade ago, are outdated. These old pipes, ranging from eight inches to one foot in diameter, can no longer manage the increased sewage flow due to rising populations and households.

Residents emphasize the necessity for new stormwater drains. Although some projects were approved, they remain unimplemented.

Umesh from Devi Nagar expressed frustration, stating, “For years, even light rain causes our streets to flood because our pipelines are so old. We’ve repeatedly asked the Hyderabad Water Board to install new ones, but nothing has changed.”

Robin Zaccheus from Neredmet added, “Without a Strategic Nala Development program in Malkajgiri, sewage overflow happens with every rain. Our complaints only get temporary fixes. We urgently need new pipelines before the upcoming monsoon to avoid last year’s issues.”

Mohammed Abid Ali from Nampally pointed out the ongoing problems. “Sewage overflow after rains is constant. It disrupts lives, makes roads dangerous, and affects mobility. Officials need to focus on long-term flood-resilient infrastructure and work with local communities and experts.”
