Hyderabad: Over the weekend, Cyberabad traffic police conducted a special operation against drunk driving, catching 283 individuals. The focus was on enforcing laws against driving under the influence within the Cyberabad area. Among those caught, 219 were riding two-wheelers, 11 were driving three-wheelers, 50 were in cars, and 3 were operating heavy vehicles.
Police reports revealed that 18 individuals had high blood alcohol levels, ranging from 200 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml. All offenders will face legal action in court. The highest numbers were recorded in Jeedimetla with 32 arrests, followed by Chevella with 27, Shamshabad with 26, and Balanagar with 22.
Most offenders were aged 31-40 years (101 people), followed by those aged 21-30 years (98 people).
In a similar campaign, Hyderabad police reported 928 drunk driving cases last week. This operation ran from June 7 to June 13. Of those caught, 805 were on two-wheelers, 44 on three-wheelers, and 79 were in cars.
The age distribution showed 20 offenders were between 18-20 years, with the largest group being 21-30 years old, totaling 394. Another 290 were aged 31-40, and 158 were 41-50 years old.
The police are tackling both underage drinking and drunk driving. After booking cases for drunk driving, they will investigate where the alcohol was purchased.
Authorities warn that anyone causing fatal accidents while drunk will face arrest under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This charge, akin to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, can lead to up to 10 years in prison and a fine.
