New Delhi: Six people have died after a multi-storey building used as a paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a major rescue operation and renewed concerns over safety standards in student housing.
The building, located in southwest Delhi near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed on Sunday afternoon while repair and renovation work was reportedly underway. Rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services and Delhi Police, were deployed to search the debris for survivors. Eleven people have reportedly been rescued, while several others were taken to hospital for treatment.
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Police have also registered a case against the building owner over alleged negligence and other violations. Authorities are examining whether unauthorised construction, renovation work and structural weaknesses contributed to the collapse.
Officials are also investigating reports of structural and safety lapses at the property, including concerns surrounding basement work and the absence of adequate emergency arrangements. The incident has intensified questions over the safety of privately operated paying guest accommodations, particularly those housing students.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and hospitals treating the injured and assured that strict action would follow if violations are established.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the need for regular structural inspections and strict enforcement of building safety regulations in densely populated urban areas.
