Hyderabad: The liver is the second largest organ in the human body, after the skin, and plays a very important role in keeping us healthy. Every year, April 19 is celebrated as World Liver Day to raise awareness about liver health. This year’s theme is “Food is Medicine,” which reminds us that what we eat can help or harm our liver.
In recent years, liver diseases have become more common in India. Conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver cirrhosis caused by alcohol, and viral hepatitis are on the rise. Doctors say this is mostly due to unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, increased alcohol use, and taking medicines without proper guidance.
Dr. Mohammed Nayeem, Clinical Director and Head of the Care Institute of Digestive Diseases & Liver Transplant in Hyderabad, said that the liver has over 500 important jobs. These include breaking down food, removing toxins, and helping the body use nutrients. He also said that more young people are having liver problems because of unhealthy habits. He believes that using food as medicine is one of the best ways to prevent liver damage.
The liver is special because it can heal itself if given a chance. In ancient Chinese medicine, it was called the “General of the Body” because of its strong protective role. It helps clean the body and keeps us healthy. The good news is that if we change our habits in time, the liver can recover. But if we don’t take care of it, it can lead to serious health problems.
To keep your liver healthy, experts suggest avoiding processed and packaged foods, especially those with too much sugar, salt, and bad fats. Instead, eat foods high in fiber, green leafy vegetables, fruits rich in antioxidants, nuts, and foods full of vitamins like E, C, and B-complex. These help protect and strengthen liver cells. Also, drinking plenty of water helps the liver do its job of cleaning out toxins from the body.
