Hyderabad: Heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms hit many parts of Hyderabad on Friday. The rain caused water to flood the streets, and several trees were uprooted. One of the trees that fell was a 300-year-old banyan tree at the Narsimhaswamy Temple in Kabootar Khana.
In just a short time, many neighborhoods—especially those in low-lying areas—were flooded. Water entered homes as drains and water bodies overflowed. Areas like Charminar, Bahadurpura, Nampally, Amberpet, Khairatabad, LB Nagar, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, and Malakpet were among the worst affected.
Due to the flooding and rain, traffic jams occurred in several parts of the city. Traffic police were posted at various junctions to help manage the situation. Commuters were asked to use alternate routes, especially around Himayatnagar, the Telugu Talli Flyover, and Begumpet.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Chandrayangutta received the highest rainfall at 8.05 centimeters, followed by Charminar and Nampally.
The strong winds also caused trees to fall in several areas. In addition to the banyan tree at Kabootar Khana, trees came down in places like Shanti Nagar, Nizam Club, Lakdikapul, Mahboobiya Gate, and Public Gardens. Some large tree branches fell on electricity wires, leading to power cuts in those areas.
In response to the situation, Ponnam Prabhakar, Hyderabad’s In-Charge Minister, asked GHMC officials to take immediate steps to help the public. He asked engineering teams to remove water from flooded areas and ensure that people are safe.
The Minister also warned residents to stay alert, as the weather department has predicted more heavy rain within the next three hours. He directed GHMC, the water board, and electricity departments to work together so that people do not face further problems in rain-affected areas.
