Farmers Protest in Peddagudem Over Unfulfilled Promises
Farmers and women agricultural workers in Peddagudem village, Telangana, held a protest to express their anger over unfulfilled promises under the Warangal Declaration. They accused the state government of failing to deliver on its commitments and demanded immediate action to address their concerns.
During the protest, farmers burned copies of the Warangal Declaration guarantee documents as part of the Bhogimantal ritual. This act symbolized their frustration with the unmet promises. Women workers involved in agricultural activities also joined the demonstration. They accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of breaking election campaign promises, particularly the assurance of financial aid, which has not been provided.
Leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supported the protest and criticized the government for failing to fulfill its guarantees. Gattu Yadav, a prominent BRS leader, condemned the Congress government for reducing the promised financial assistance for farmers. He stated, “The government has failed to deliver on its six guarantees. Loan waivers have not been implemented, funds are insufficient, and the promised ₹15,000 per acre has been reduced to ₹12,000, leaving farmers in distress.”
The protesters demanded several actions, including the immediate release of ₹17,500 per acre. This amount includes ₹7,500 previously withheld and an additional ₹2,500 as a promised increase. They also called for clarity on compensation for tenant farmers and laborers, which has been delayed for months.
Several local leaders, including P. Kurumurthy Yadav and Marku Fed Director Vijay Kumar, participated in the protest. They reaffirmed their party’s commitment to fighting for farmers’ rights. They also highlighted the pending ₹26,000 crore for farmer insurance, which remains unaddressed.
The farmers warned that if the government does not act by January 26, they will intensify their protests. The unrest underscores growing dissatisfaction in the agricultural community over unfulfilled promises, putting pressure on the government to respond swiftly.
