GHMC leader demands end to manual scavenging

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner, RV Karnan, has strictly instructed all Zonal and Deputy Commissioners to eliminate manual scavenging in drains.

The Commissioner stressed using only machines for sanitation, ensuring safe conditions for workers.

RV Karnan urged Deputy and Zonal Commissioners to oversee all garbage clearance activities closely. He asked each zone to create a dedicated team for sanitation management to maintain cleanliness and safety.

He warned of serious consequences for any negligence in sanitation, highlighting GHMC’s dedication to public health and worker safety.

In a related event, Khairtabad Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanti fined the Ramky agency Rs 1 lakh.

During inspections on Monday, the Zonal Commissioner noticed that garbage at a vulnerable point on Alijapur Road near Karwan and Jubilee Hills Circles was not cleared promptly.

The garbage stretched for about 200 meters, creating inconvenience and unsanitary conditions. The fine was imposed because the agency ignored several reminders to resolve the issue.
