Hyderabad is getting ready for the upcoming monsoon season by stepping up efforts to prevent floods and waterlogging. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched several safety and maintenance initiatives to protect the city during heavy rains.
To reduce the risk of flooding, GHMC teams are cleaning out stormwater drains and nalas, especially in low-lying areas. This process, called desilting, helps water flow smoothly and prevents it from collecting on roads and in neighborhoods.
GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has instructed all officials to act quickly and responsibly. He warned that any delay or negligence will result in strict disciplinary action. Every department must follow a detailed monsoon action plan and report their progress regularly.
The commissioner emphasized special care for spots that usually flood during rains. He urged officials to come up with long-term fixes to these trouble areas, not just temporary solutions.
To improve safety, GHMC has given specific duties to Assistant Engineers (AEs) and Deputy Executive Engineers (DEEs). They must make sure all open nalas are fenced off and marked with clear warning signs. This will help prevent accidents near box drains and stormwater channels.
With these steps, GHMC hopes to keep the city safer and more prepared as the rains approach.
