Hyderabad, March 13, 2026: Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi-ka-pul, a Fortis Network Hospital, observed World Kidney Day 2026 by reaffirming its dedication to advancing renal health through early detection, patient education, and sustainable healthcare practices. The global theme for this year, “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet”, highlights the crucial connection between environmental well-being and kidney health.
The hospital’s Department of Nephrology, led by renowned nephrologists Dr. K.S. Nayak, Dr. Chaitanya Varma, and Dr. Ravi Kumar N, continues to establish benchmarks in advanced kidney care, transplantation, and dialysis services. The medical team emphasized the importance of integrating environmental consciousness with patient care to address the growing burden of kidney disease.
Dr. K.S. Nayak, Director of Nephrology and Renal Transplant Services at Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi-ka-pul, stated that World Kidney Day has transformed from a simple awareness day into a global movement demanding earlier detection, equitable access to care, and sustainable treatment methods. He noted that the hospital focuses not only on complex transplants and advanced dialysis but also on prevention, patient education, and reducing the environmental footprint of therapies such as dialysis.
The hospital outlined five key focus areas for World Kidney Day 2026, including raising awareness about how climate change, heat stress, and environmental toxins contribute to kidney disease. Other priorities include promoting eco-friendly practices in resource-intensive therapies, encouraging regular kidney screening for high-risk groups, spreading awareness about healthy habits through the 8 Golden Rules for Kidney Health, and celebrating 20 years of the World Kidney Day campaign’s global impact.
Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi-ka-pul has established itself as a center of excellence for kidney care, having successfully performed over 3,000 kidney transplants, with more than 60 percent in diabetic and high-risk cases. The hospital has pioneered Swap and ABO-Incompatible kidney transplants, achieving remarkable success rates. Notably, the facility performed the country’s first interstate, inter-hospital swap kidney transplant, setting a national benchmark for innovation and coordination in transplant medicine.
The hospital offers comprehensive dialysis services including haemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, and peritoneal dialysis, with peritoneal dialysis initiated within two hours of catheter insertion. Training programs for home haemodialysis empower patients with independence and improved quality of life. The facility also provides sophisticated extracorporeal therapies in critical care, including plasmapheresis, continuous renal replacement therapy, and hemoperfusion.
Mr. Bharath Kanth Reddy R Y, Chief Executive Officer of the Chennai and Hyderabad Cluster at Gleneagles Hospitals, emphasized that kidney care today extends beyond having advanced ICUs and transplant theaters. He highlighted that the organization’s teams are working to make every aspect of kidney care more patient-centered, protocol-driven, and environmentally conscious, safeguarding both community health and the planet.
The hospital has achieved significant milestones including India’s first combined kidney and heart transplantation and Andhra Pradesh’s first deceased donor kidney transplant. The facility has also introduced single-dose equine ATG induction therapy for low-risk renal transplant patients and developed specialized expertise in sequential and simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation, offering integrated, life-saving solutions for complex cases.
