Hyderabad: The Telangana government, led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, is considering removing the rule that prevents candidates with more than two children from running in local body elections.
During a press conference, Revanth Reddy discussed the successful family planning efforts in southern states, suggesting that the central government should recognize these achievements. He mentioned that Andhra Pradesh recently changed its laws, eliminating this rule for urban elections because of concerns over decreasing birth rates.
The two-child rule was first implemented in the undivided Andhra Pradesh in 1994 for both urban and rural elections. While Telangana dropped this rule for urban areas in 2019, it still applies to rural regions. The state now plans to amend the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, 2018, aiming to remove the disqualification for candidates with more than two children in panchayat elections.
