The Telangana state government has announced plans to relocate several government and institutional buildings from the Musi river corridor to new development hubs in HMDA layouts at Shamshabad and the upcoming Future City. This decision is part of the ambitious Musi Riverfront Development Project (MRDP), which seeks to rejuvenate the 55-kilometre river stretch running through Hyderabad and create a modern urban landscape.

The institutions identified for relocation include the Water and Land Management Training and Research Institute (WALAMTARI), Institute of Cooperative Management (ICM), Telangana Institute of Rural Development (TGIRD), and the Telangana State Cooperative Apex Bank Training Centre (TGCAB). Additionally, SC/ST IAS study circles, allied educational facilities, and integrated vegetable and flower markets will also be shifted to the new locations.

The relocation plan may extend beyond these institutions to include other government offices, institutional buildings, and tourism-related infrastructure as determined by the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL). The state government has already allocated land along the river for the project implementation. MRDCL has issued requests for proposals to appoint consultants who will design the new institutional spaces with emphasis on sustainability, resilience, and long-term urban growth.

According to officials, the primary objective of this relocation is to decongest the Musi riverfront area and reduce environmental stress on the river ecosystem. The move aligns with the state’s broader urban development strategy of creating new growth corridors equipped with modern infrastructure. The initiative is expected to support the overall vision of developing Future City as a planned urban centre.

The new institutional hubs at Shamshabad and Future City are strategically positioned to benefit from proximity to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), which will ensure improved connectivity. The planned urban ecosystems in these areas are designed to accommodate modern infrastructure requirements and provide better facilities for the institutions being relocated.

The selected consultant will be responsible for preparing comprehensive architectural, structural, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) designs in consultation with the concerned institutions. These designs must be submitted to MRDCL for approval before implementation begins.
