Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is working on an ambitious plan to establish a network of logistics hubs between the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the upcoming Regional Ring Road (RRR). The initiative aims to streamline freight movement, reduce heavy vehicle congestion inside Hyderabad, and support the city’s long-term industrial and economic growth.
With Hyderabad witnessing rapid urban expansion and increasing commercial activity, authorities believe dedicated logistics parks on the outskirts will help decongest city roads while improving supply chain efficiency for businesses.
Why Logistics Hubs Are Needed
Hyderabad’s ORR is connected to more than 11 National and State Highways, resulting in thousands of trucks entering the metropolitan region every day. Currently, heavy commercial vehicles are allowed to enter the city only during restricted hours, generally between 10 PM and 8 AM, to minimize traffic congestion.
Despite these restrictions, increasing freight movement continues to put pressure on urban roads. HMDA believes that shifting loading, unloading and warehousing activities to dedicated logistics hubs outside the city will significantly improve traffic flow.
How the Logistics Hub Model Will Work
Under the proposed model, trucks carrying goods from other cities will stop at logistics hubs located between the ORR and RRR instead of entering Hyderabad.
Goods will be unloaded, sorted and transferred to smaller commercial vehicles for distribution within the city. This hub-and-spoke model is expected to reduce the number of heavy trucks on Hyderabad roads while improving delivery efficiency.
Modern Infrastructure Planned
Each logistics hub is expected to be developed with modern freight-handling infrastructure, including loading and unloading zones, warehouses, cold storage facilities, packaging units, truck parking areas, driver rest rooms, restaurants, fuel stations, vehicle repair garages and primary healthcare facilities.
The integrated facilities are designed to support transport operators, logistics companies, manufacturers and agricultural supply chains.
Locations Identified by HMDA
HMDA has identified multiple locations in Medchal-Malkajgiri and Ranga Reddy districts for the proposed logistics network. Most hubs are expected to be developed on land parcels exceeding 100 acres.
Proposed locations in Medchal district include:
Dabeerpur (100 acres), Batsingaram Logistics Hub (100 acres), Ravalakal (100 acres), Pudur (80 acres), Pudur Survey No. 608 (50 acres), Yadarpalli West (136 acres) and Yadarpalli East (85 acres).
Proposed locations in Ranga Reddy district include:
Kondakal-Velimala (233 acres), Brahmanpally-Venkatapur (677 acres), Lingareddipet (128 acres) and Dandumailaram (212 acres).
Projects to Be Developed Under PPP Model
According to the proposal, the logistics parks will be developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. This approach is expected to attract private investment while enabling HMDA to create modern logistics infrastructure without bearing the entire financial burden.
The PPP model is also expected to generate new revenue streams for HMDA while accelerating project execution.
Benefits for Hyderabad
Urban planners believe the proposed logistics hubs could transform freight transportation across the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region. The project is expected to provide smoother freight movement, reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety, support industrial development, generate employment and strengthen Hyderabad’s position as one of India’s leading logistics destinations.
The initiative also complements the city’s future expansion towards the Regional Ring Road, where several industrial parks, manufacturing clusters, data centres and logistics facilities are already being planned.
Supporting Hyderabad’s Next Phase of Growth
As Hyderabad continues to expand beyond the ORR, planners believe logistics infrastructure will play a critical role in supporting future urban development. By creating strategically located freight hubs between the ORR and RRR, HMDA aims to ensure that the city’s economic growth is matched by efficient transportation, reduced congestion and better connectivity for industries across Telangana.
