The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is planning to construct two new elevated corridors to ease traffic congestion and provide faster connectivity from the core city areas to the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
The existing routes connecting the Inner Ring Road to the Outer Ring Road have become heavily congested with traffic. Areas including Mehdipatnam, Secunderabad, Begumpet, Panjagutta, Banjara Hills and other parts of the city are facing severe traffic problems while reaching the ORR.
The first proposed corridor will run from Sheikhpet Nala to CBIT in Gandipet along the Gandipet Conduit. HMDA plans to widen the existing road by 200 feet on both sides. An elevated corridor of approximately seven kilometers is expected to be constructed on this route, allowing motorists to reach the Outer Ring Road directly without traffic interruptions.
The second corridor will connect Banjara Hills Road No. 12 to the Outer Ring Road via Filmnagar, Judges Colony, Durgam Cheruvu, T-Hub and Shilpa Layout in Gachibowli. The state government has given approval for this expressway to address traffic issues faced by IT employees and residents. A six-lane steel bridge will be constructed for about six to seven kilometers on this route, with underpasses at various locations.
HMDA has recently invited tenders for appointing a consultancy to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Banjara Hills to Shilpa Layout corridor. Officials have already completed preliminary surveys for both projects.
Meanwhile, work is already progressing on other elevated corridors. The Secunderabad to Dairy Farm elevated corridor on the Medchal route is under construction. Additionally, HMDA has finalized an agreement with Bechem Infra Project Limited for constructing an 18.5-kilometer elevated corridor from Paradise in Secunderabad to Shamirpet ORR Junction at a cost of Rs. 2,232 crore. This project includes an 11.65-kilometer six-lane flyover, 6.52 kilometers at ground level, and a 450-meter underground tunnel at Hakimpeta. The construction deadline is set at 24 months.
HMDA Commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmed stated that extensive plans are being drawn up for road development and expansion to facilitate travel from all parts of the city to the Outer Ring Road and the regional ring road.
