Currently active off the Andhra Pradesh – Tamil Nadu coast, Cyclone Ditwah continues to influence inland weather conditions due to which Telangana is experiencing an unusually sharp dip in temperatures. The state witnessed an early winter chill over the weekend with several districts recording temperatures which were far below the typical range for this time of the year.
Sirpur in Kumaram Bheem district reported a minimum of 9.7℃, the lowest across Telangana while many northern districts looked at single digits. Hyderabad recorded significantly cooler mornings as well. Temperatures settled between 13℃ and 15℃, accompanied by light, patchy drizzle in several areas.
Meteorologists say the sudden chill is happening because thick clouds from the cyclone have moved over Telangana. These clouds are blocking sunlight during the day, so the ground is not warming up like it normally does. As a result, both days and nights are turning colder. The cyclone is also pulling in a lot of moisture, which is why many places are seeing light drizzle early in the morning and dull, grey skies through the day.
The weather department has said that this pattern may continue for the next few days. Light to moderate rain is likely in districts such as Khammam, Suryapet, Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool. A yellow alert has been issued in case a few areas receive heavier showers depending on how the cyclone moves.
For people across Telangana, the combination of cold winds, cloudy skies and damp mornings feels more like late December than the usual early-winter weather. Morning travel in the northern parts of the state may be uncomfortable because of the low temperatures and patches of fog.
As Cyclone Ditwah continues to affect weather systems inland, Telangana may see more cloudy and chilly days. It is a reminder that even a coastal cyclone can change the weather far away from the coastline.
