Hyderabad is witnessing a unique initiative that bridges the gap between generations through meaningful companionship. IAS Harichandana Dasari, the Collector of Hyderabad, has launched the Senior Saathi program to address loneliness among elderly citizens in the city.

The 2010-batch Telangana cadre officer has designed this first-of-its-kind intergenerational companionship programme to tackle one of urban India’s most overlooked challenges. The initiative brings together young volunteers and senior citizens for regular weekend interactions.

“I am particularly passionate about our Senior Saathis program,” Dasari shared, highlighting her commitment to compassionate governance rooted in real community needs.

The program addresses a growing concern in rapidly modernising cities like Hyderabad, where nuclear families have become the norm and many elderly residents live alone while their children work abroad. Studies indicate that 13.4% of older adults aged 60 and above report frequent feelings of loneliness and depression, which are associated with illnesses like Alzheimers, dementia, and cognitive decline.

Under Senior Saathi, young volunteers commit four hours each week to spend quality time with elderly citizens. These meetings take place in community halls, parks, senior citizen clubs, or other designated gathering spaces across the city.

The interactions are designed to be both practical and emotionally supportive. Activities include casual conversations, playing indoor games, taking walks together, and helping seniors navigate the digital world. Young Saathis teach elderly participants how to use mobile phones, navigate WhatsApp, and protect themselves from online scams.

Digital helplessness and fear of online frauds have emerged as significant challenges for many senior citizens. The program directly addresses these concerns by empowering the elderly with essential digital literacy skills.

The initiative reflects Dasari’s broader approach to making governance more accessible and empathetic. By focusing on the emotional and practical needs of senior citizens, the program fills a critical gap in urban social support systems.

Thousands of elderly residents in Hyderabad navigate long days without companionship, facing loneliness in silence. Senior Saathi offers them regular social interaction, mental stimulation, and a sense of purpose through intergenerational bonding.

The program has quickly gained recognition as a standout effort in compassionate governance. It demonstrates how administrative initiatives can directly improve quality of life for vulnerable populations in fast-changing urban landscapes.

Young volunteers benefit equally from the program, gaining wisdom and life experience from their elderly companions while contributing meaningfully to their community. This mutual exchange strengthens social fabric and creates lasting bonds across age groups.

The Collector of Hyderabad continues to expand the reach of Senior Saathi, making it accessible to more elderly citizens and recruiting additional youth volunteers to participate in this meaningful initiative.
