The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA) demolished a seven-story building in Madhapur’s Ayyappa Society on Sunday, calling it an illegal construction. The building, located on a 100-foot road, was dismantled under tight security, with HYDRAA working alongside the Disaster Response Force (DRF) and Revenue authorities.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath explained that the demolition followed an earlier directive from the Telangana High Court. The court had instructed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take down the unauthorized structure.
Commissioner Ranganath revealed that the builder broke multiple regulations during construction. “The builder tried to block earlier demolition attempts by sealing holes made in the building’s slab and then went ahead to construct seven illegal floors,” he stated. He also mentioned that a contempt petition regarding the illegal construction is currently being reviewed by the High Court.
Illegal constructions are a common issue in Ayyappa Society, according to Ranganath. He pointed out that many buildings in the area lack proper approvals from the relevant authorities. The Commissioner added that HYDRAA would give priority to demolishing buildings flagged by the court. He described the situation in the area as worrying, as several illegal structures house students and employees. Many of these buildings reportedly lack basic safety measures, such as fire safety clearances.
To tackle the issue, HYDRAA plans to work with GHMC to address the growing number of unauthorized constructions in the area. A detailed review of existing buildings is already underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
Additionally, HYDRAA plans to submit a report to the state government, identifying officials responsible for permitting the construction of the now-demolished building. The agency also noted that the building’s cellar had been illegally converted into a kitchen without fire department approval. Proper parking facilities were not developed, adding to the safety and regulatory violations.
