Hyderabad metro passengers are getting a small relief after a recent hike in ticket prices. L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (L&TMRHL) has announced a 10% discount on the new fare rates. This discount will begin on May 24 and will apply to all three metro corridors in the city.
Just last week, L&TMRHL confirmed a fare increase for the first time since the metro started in November 2017. The basic ticket price rose from ₹10 to ₹12, and the highest fare jumped from ₹60 to ₹75, starting May 17. The increase sparked criticism from daily commuters and opposition leaders.
The fare hike was based on recommendations from the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC). The main reason given was to make sure the metro system stays financially stable in the long run. Rising costs of operations and maintenance pushed the need for a revision.
To soften the impact of the price hike, L&TMRHL decided to reduce the new fares by 10%. With this discount, passengers will now pay around ₹11 for the shortest trip and up to ₹68 for the longest.
KVB Reddy, Managing Director and CEO of L&TMRHL, said the price adjustment was necessary to support the metro’s future. However, he added that the company listened to public feedback and introduced the discount to support passengers during the change.
The discount will apply across all zones and lines of the Hyderabad Metro starting May 24.
