Hyderabad’s authorities are planning a major drainage project to tackle flooding issues. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) aims to expand a 7.5-kilometer stormwater channel. This expansion will connect Masab Cheruvu, Dilawar Khan Lake, and Pedda Amberpet Lake to reduce waterlogging in crucial city areas.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath and Ibrahimpatnam MLA Mal Reddy Ranga Reddy inspected areas around Masab Cheruvu after many complaints about drainage problems. The current drain between Masab Cheruvu and Dilawar Khan Cheruvu has been flooding local neighborhoods. The plan is to rebuild the channel to manage heavy rains effectively.
Officials also visited Jaalikunta, where new double-bedroom homes are flooding due to poor drainage systems. Construction has stopped because water is leaking into basements.
Several neighborhoods between Masab Cheruvu and Dilawarkhan Lake face regular flooding because they lack proper drainage. Ranganath announced a meeting with the Revenue, GHMC, and Irrigation departments to create a comprehensive action plan.
He emphasized the need for wide drains to prevent future problems as the area’s population and construction grow. Ranganath warned against filling lakes with soil, stating that legal action will be taken against violators contributing to the flooding.
The officials also checked Karmanghat and Badangpet, where drain expansion has stalled. In Uday Nagar Colony, Karmanghat, Ranganath directed immediate work on the nala.
At Raviryala Lake, they examined overflow channels due to upstream flooding reports. The Commissioner evaluated flood risks for nearby homes and checked the lake’s water flow conditions.
In conclusion, Ranganath stressed that without protecting lakes and nalas from illegal encroachments and ensuring their development, Hyderabad will continue facing flooding during the monsoon.
