A strong weather system forming in the Arabian Sea is set to bring heavy rain to many parts of South India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This low-pressure system could turn into a cyclone and is likely to hit the Karnataka coast by tomorrow. The weather disturbance is expected to last until May 23.
States like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat will experience widespread rainfall over the next few days.
In Andhra Pradesh, several districts are on alert for heavy downpours. The affected areas include Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur, YSR Kadapa, Sri Sathya Sai, Annamaya, Chittoor, Tirupati, Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore, and surrounding regions.
The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has also forecast heavy rains across Telangana for the next four days. Many districts will see light to moderate showers, and daytime temperatures are expected to drop by 3 to 5°C below normal for the next three days.
On Monday, May 19, strong showers are expected in districts like Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, and nearby areas.
Rain will continue into Tuesday, May 20, hitting districts such as Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, and Mulugu. These areas will also see thunderstorms, lightning, and winds blowing at 30–40 km/h.
The IMD has issued yellow alerts for the vulnerable regions. Rainfall is expected to continue through Wednesday, Thursday, and even Friday.
Authorities are urging farmers and local residents to take necessary safety steps to protect crops and stay informed, as this unseasonal weather could cause damage.
