Hyderabad: The state government has ended all speculation by appointing K Ramakrishna Rao as the new Chief Secretary of Telangana. He will officially take charge on April 30 after the current Chief Secretary, Santhi Kumari, retires.
Ramakrishna Rao is a senior IAS officer from the 1991 batch. He has been leading the Finance Department for the past 10 years and played an important role in managing the state’s finances, especially during the Covid-19 crisis in 2021 and 2022 under the previous BRS government.
After the Congress party came to power in December 2023, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also depended on Ramakrishna Rao’s financial expertise. He introduced several new systems to improve financial control and make fund allocations more transparent.
Until a new Finance Secretary is appointed, Ramakrishna Rao will also handle the Finance Department in addition to his new role.
Throughout his career, he has held several important positions. He was in charge of the State Reorganization Department, which dealt with issues related to the creation of Telangana and the division of assets with Andhra Pradesh.
He also served as the Director General of the Centre for Good Governance (CGG), where he introduced many reforms by using information technology to improve administration.
Ramakrishna Rao graduated from IIT Kanpur and holds a Master’s degree in Business Management. He began his career as the Collector of Adilabad district.
Meanwhile, there are reports that Santhi Kumari has been offered roles as Government Advisor or Chief Information Commissioner after her retirement. However, she has not yet made a decision.
