Hyderabad: The protest by contract assistant professors continued on Sunday at Osmania University. The protesters held a broom in one hand and a pen in the other as they swept the university campus. They are demanding that the State government make their jobs permanent.

The professors have been protesting for two weeks. Contract assistant professors from 12 universities across Telangana are taking part. These include Osmania University in Hyderabad, Telangana University in Nizamabad, Mahatma Gandhi University in Nalgonda, Kakatiya University in Warangal, and others.

The protesters said they have been asking the government to provide job security, basic pay, dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), and a yearly salary increase of three percent. Even though they submitted many requests to officials, no action has been taken. To draw attention to their cause, they started an indefinite strike two weeks ago.

As part of the protest, some lecturers at Osmania University symbolically swept the campus while holding a broom and a pen. They said this act was meant to wake up government officials to their demands.

One of the protesters, Upender Rao, said, “We are qualified for regular posts according to UGC rules, but we have not been recognized. In other states like Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Manipur, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, contract teachers have been made permanent, but not here.”

He added, “Our main demands are the immediate withdrawal of GO 21, regularization of all contract teaching staff, payment of DA and HRA, salaries according to the seventh pay commission, and job security. We will continue protesting until we get justice.”
