Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy highlighted India’s ambitious plans for developing critical minerals through the National Critical Mineral Mission. The Ministry of Mines hosted an event at T-Hub on Tuesday, where a new ‘Center of Excellence’ was launched to boost research and innovation in this field.

Reddy praised Hyderabad as a growing center for creativity, science, and technology, providing a supportive environment for research and business. He described the city as a launchpad for new ideas and innovation.

Reflecting on the past decade, Reddy credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting a scientific approach across different sectors. He explained that the NCMM was created to address global supply chain issues and geopolitical tensions, emphasizing the need for local expertise.

Reddy stressed the importance of researching critical minerals, especially as the demand for EV batteries and renewable energy technologies is expected to triple by 2030. He mentioned the establishment of Centers of Excellence at four IITs and three research labs to help build a self-reliant future for India.

The minister highlighted India’s achievements in coal production and transportation, noting the milestone of crossing 1 billion tonnes. He announced plans for upcoming auctions of underground coal gasification and offshore mineral blocks to encourage private sector involvement and enhance exploration.

During the seminar, the sixth round of critical mineral auctions was launched, covering 23 blocks. For the first time, states like Telangana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal are participating.

Reddy called for action, echoing Prime Minister Modi’s slogan: “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan.” He urged the Centers of Excellence to work towards India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, with critical minerals playing a key role.

To support mine workers, Reddy announced a Rs 1 crore insurance policy for coal miners, showing the government’s dedication to safety and dignity in the mining sector.
