    Landslides in Vijayawada leave four dead, rescue efforts ongoing

    In Vijayawada’s Moghalrajpuram area, near Sunnapubatti Centre, four people lost their lives due to landslides triggered by heavy rains on Saturday.

    The victims have been identified as Meghana, who was 25 years old, Lakshmi, aged 49, and Annapurna, who was 55 years old. The fourth victim’s identity is still unknown. Rescuers were trying to retrieve the body of the fourth victim when another landslide occurred, making the rescue operations even more difficult. It is suspected that the unidentified person might be a worker from Kolkata.

    Six other people were injured in the landslide and were quickly taken to a nearby hospital. The condition of two of those injured is reported to be critical.

    Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed his shock over the tragic incident and offered his condolences to the families of the deceased. He expressed his sorrow over the loss of four lives and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for each of the victims’ families. The Chief Minister also assured the affected families of the government’s support and directed authorities to evacuate residents from areas at risk. He urged the public to cooperate with officials during these operations.

    In a related incident, landslides also took place on the Indrakeeladri hill due to continuous heavy rainfall in Vijayawada. Boulders fell onto the Protocol Room, but a major disaster was avoided as the Ghat Road had been closed in advance.
